Y’all, in the year of our Lord, 2026, I decided to give historical romance a chance since that’s mainly what I write.
Backstory rq: I began writing historical romance because Black History is not only one of my favorite things EVER, but I also love the kind of love from the past. Misogyny and prejudice aside, when men yearned like their lives depended on it, or when the women made the men sweat, and it was socially acceptable to starve the desires of men, I had to get involved with that (in my Ryan coolers voice). I consider myself a champion of historical black love, and that led me to this…
I decided to go down the Beverly Jenkins rabbit hole, and HOLY SMOKES, she is quite literally the Queen Mother of Historical romance, Black or White or Asian. I’ve literally read about 13 of her books just this year alone, and if I run out, I may just lose my mind as well. I remember seeing her books in the older ladies’ bags at church, and thought they were real old school. Sometimes, as I was growing up, I began to think of them more scandalously as the cover looked the same. LAWD, was I missing out!!!
Her books read like a night of impassioned slow dancing under the midnight blanket known as the sky. Where desire isn’t starved or punished but tended to like a newborn baby and fattened over time. Though I lack experience in the romance and sex department (I intend to wait ’til marriage), I must say, she makes me excited to love and dote on my future spouse with hopes that he may do the same. Her works make me blush real pinks, heat so hot, and swoon something serious. And I love that the FMC’s are never spineless or brainless, the men are reallllll manly, and they’re gentlemen who allow their women to be who they are. I can also admire that the characters tend to have personal depth with plausible quirks that fit the times (ex. men trying to be macho, but that’s what men did in the 1800s). Also, how she continuously writes about the good of the race while introducing actual history in to mingle with the story. I could go on and on about Ms. BJ, but I’ll spare you the details.
All in all, 1,000,000/10 star writer.
